Over the past few days I have seen a trend emerge that I am absolutely obsessed with, black strapless suits. It doesn't even need to be said, but imagine just how flattering this would be. The strapless top adds a femininity to a look that might otherwise seem too harsh. It makes it modern and sophisticated. The key is to keep the hair simple and allow the look to do all the talking. It looks best with hair that is pulled back or short.
First Carey Mulligan wore a Balenciaga jumpsuit in Cannes.
It's so surprise that I adore her style (or what I've seen her wear post The Great Gatsby), even though I think part of my love for her wardrobe stems from me thinking of her as Daisy...but I digress. I love the effortlessness of pairing a simple pair of wayfarers with this look. Her hairstyle also compliments the look flawlessly. It doesn't complete and allows the bold lines of the outfit to standout.
Than Jennifer Lawrence rocked this amazing look at Cannes as well, to promote the new Catching Fire movie.
Wedges are a summer essential, to me. I'm very particular about wedges in the winter because I feel like they often times can look cheap or too trendy, but summer wedges are easier to pull off. They're obviously more comfortable than regular pumps, and give off a nice laid back feeling. They're the perfect thing to pair with a cute sundress, or ever a great pair of shorts. I'm thrilled the wedge seasons has finally begun! Here are five pairs I'm loving at the moment.
Ella Moss's Evelyn Wedges are gorgeous. I love the detail on the heel. These could easily be transitioned into the fall! (They also come in red)
I recently purchased a pair of the J.Crew Summer Sandals and seriously love them. They're a great height, so they won't make a sundress look too skimpy, but still add enough of a lift to elongate your leg. I got the nude in hopes they will go with everything.
The J.Crew Espadrille is so cute. I love the modern take on a classic shoe. The lacing element adds such a fun, feminine touch to them.
I own a pair of Jack Rogers wedges already and literally live in them. They are the most comfortable pair of wedges I own. The pair I have has a high heel height but I'm liking these because I think they'll be easier to wear with dressed. I'm definitely looking to add a few more pairs to my closet this summer!
Birchbox time again, friends. This month I was a little disappointed, it was pretty slim pickins but think the theme is pretty cool. This month is was all about you and you're apparently supposed to be able to edit your settings so they know what kind of samples you like receiving in your boxes each month.
COOLA: Classic Face SPF 30 Cucumber Moisturizer for Face:This mineral sunblock is infused with organic antiaging ingredients like evening primrose extract and borage seed oil. -I'm excited to try this since I'm ashamed to admit that I never use SPF on my face (I know I know, no lectures please).
Sumital: Color Contrast Eyeliner:Inspired by traditional Indian formulas, this velvety liner glides on easily and lasts for hours.
Klorane: Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk: Beloved by celebs this award-winning formula adds tons of texture and helps revive second-day styles. -I'm not much of a dry shampoo girl, I've actually never used it because I'm religious about washing my hair every day so I doubt I'll try this.
Marvis: Classic Mint Toothpaste:A stylish Italian import with an invigorating peppermint flavor. -I used this this past weekend and it was delicious and the perfect travel size.
This past weekend was crazy, and I thought I would share with you some of the highlights.
Saturday morning was The Color Run. (I bet you're all excited to finally have me shut up about it now, but let me just give this tiny synopsis and then I promise I won't bring it up again).
I checked the weather religiously last week, keeping my fingers crossed that the rain and predicted thunderstorms would hold out, and thank goodness they did (we even got a little sunshine!). We got there about an hour a head of time and it was packed, 25,000 people were supposedly participating. We had to wait a while for the race to actually begin (it was scheduled to start at 9:00) and we eventually jumped the fence and just joined in. We had so much fun! It was surprisingly more intense than I anticipated, I had heard it was rather laid back because people tend to bring small children, but we ran the entire race. We got covered in color!
But here comes the however, the color didn't come out of my hair. I had read that it should come off your skin relatively easily. We all showered immediately after and it did come off pretty easy, I scrubbed and scrubbed and got 98% off in the first shower.
However, my hair wasn't as lucky. Here is a big public service announcement: if you're blonde, wear a hat! I washed my hair three times in my initial shower and had no luck. Later that night I took another shower and washed it seven times and it faded slightly but I still looked like I belonged on Teen Mom. I panicked and booked an emergency highlighting job and she was lucky enough to cover it up. The website says that the color will come out after a few washes and I do believe it, since my did fade after my vigourous scrubbing, but it wasn't happening quickly enough. All I could picture was showing up to work today with pink streaks, my class of Hello Kitty's biggest fans would have loved that...
In the midst of my hair trauma, I agreed to go sit in a dark movie theater to see the movie I have been anticipating for the past year, The Great Gatsby.
It was amazing!!!! You must run to go see it!
Leo is gorgeous and there aren't words to describe how wonderful his acting was.
The costumes are breathtaking.
I've been listening to the soundtrack nonstop since, it's incredible (even though I'm not sure it necessarily goes with the movie) but still, love it. I've been listening to Lana Del Ray's Young and Beautiful on loop for three days.
I'm rereading the timeless novel now and have Trimalchio: An Early Version of The Great Gatsby on my To Read List. (Follow me on Goodreads)
If you were to peak inside my makeup bag you would see that it contains products from a wide price range. I'm far from a makeup guru, I pretty much wear the same things all the time (with a few variations) but I have figured out, over the years, there are some products that are just worth the splurge. I definitely not a makeup snob, several of my things are from the drugstore (i.e. moisturizer and mascara) but some items are really of a higher quality. These are the items I couldn't live without and feel are well worth the price.
I've spoken of my love for my Clarisonic quite often but my love for it does not fade. It's works incredibly well and leaves you with such a clean feeling. A friend of mine (shout of to Claire) has the Mia II and says it actually notifies you when to switch areas on your face so it sounds like the few extra dollars are well worth it.
I've spent years looking for just the right face wash. A salewoman at Nordstrom recommended this to me and told me it is one of the best products out there, now I must say I have to agree with her. The price is a little steep for face wash but one tube lasts me about three months.
Similar to my quest for the perfect face wash, I've tried just about every hair product on the market. There are several that I have fallen in love with, but this one is a constant and has never let me down. Similar to my face wash, a bottle of this will last me months (I'm talking almost 6) since I only use two pumps at a time. It smells incredible and leaves your hair so soft (it also doesn't make your hair greasy- which is huge)
I don't wear much lipstick but when I do I find that quality makes a huge difference. It stays on longer and the consistency is much better. Plus, the shades they come in are so gorgeous you can't help but love them.
Do you have any beauty products that are worth the splurge?
Wednesday night I came home from work and was greeted by the new In Style magazine. A friend of mine gave me a subscription to it for Christmas and I am embarrassed to admit I have been negligent with my reading. I have, no joke, five of them piled up in my room, un opened. So I decided Wednesday that I would take my shower early (practically as soon as I walked in the door) and dedicate the entire night to catching up on my reading (and indulging in a few of my other guilty pleasures). Here are a few of the things that never fail to put me in a good mood.
The world moves so quickly and it's easy to get wrapped up in what we're doing and to forget to take a little time for ourselves.
Aside from catching up on my much needed magazine reading, I also got to get caught up on my shows (New Girl and The Mindy Project are like crack to me).
I dedicated a little time to my, dying for a manicure, hands.
When Froyo isn't available to me (or I'm too lazy to go get it), Baskin Robins rainbow sherbet is great stand in. It's been my favorite since I was a little girl.
And finally, after spending some wonderful quality time with myself, I hunkered down nice and early and read my book.
Since one of my resolutions this year was to expand my jewelry collection, I have spent a great deal of time trying to look for the perfect pieces to add to my collection. But I've noticed I gravitate more toward statement necklaces and bracelets, I've rarely bought earrings. It's not that I don't love earrings, because I do, but for some reason I tend to pair a bigger necklace with a simple neckline instead of opting for chunky earrings. But I've resolved myself to attempt to try and mix it up. Here are some of the statement earrings I'd love to add to my collection.

Yesterday I had a very tough day. Without going into too much detail, I was faced with a major disappointment. Something I had never expected to happen, did and as a result I was heartbroken. After crying for what felt like forever I realized that wallowing in self pity would serve no purpose, that it was time to focus that energy on something that will make my life better. It's easy, when something bad happens, for us to become angry or hurt, to not understand and to want answers, but ultimately we have to face that they may never come. Everyone, no matter who you are, faces disappointments, and it's who we are in those moments that define us. We need to stand up, no matter how difficult it may be, and persevere. The quote above is one of my all time favorites and I repeat it to myself in my darkest moments. It's easy to succumb to sadness but the true test of character is moving on.
Last week on Instagram I noticed several of my favorite blogs participating in "what's in my purse" tags. I have a confession, I'm obsessed with posts about what people have in their bags. I don't know what it is, but I love to see what people carry with them everyday (plus it's such eye candy to get to see what different kind of handbags people have). If you're like me and love these posts you have to check out purseblog's posts. I've done a few posts on this before (see here and here) but I thought it was time to do an update (with real photos this time). So here you go!
5. Kindle: I carry this with me everywhere because I have an irrational fear of getting stuck somewhere with nothing to do
Sunglasses: Would you believe I carry five different pairs with me at all times. I definitely need a new system. But in the morning I'm trying to hard to get out of the house on time, I can't spare a few minutes to decide which pair I want to wear that day, so I keep them with me at all times. (In high school I carried every textbook with me at all times and rarely put things in my locker, just n case I needed them. It's a wonder I didn't have scoliosis).
In Case of Emergency: This Lilly cosmetic case carries everything I could possibly need on a daily basis.
4. Essential Duplicates of Makeup (bronzer, coverup, ect.)
5. Aspirin (plus other essential medicine)
7. Hand Sanitizer
10. Nail File/ Nail Clippers
11. Spare iPhone Charger
12. Blister Blocker
One of my students last year gave me this adorable bag as an end of the year gift and I use it to keep spare lipgloss.
