May Book Review

Before I delve too deeply into my new book, The One and Only by Emily Giffin, I wanted to make sure that I got my previous book review out so that it would be fresh in my mind. Last week I finally finished Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple.

I feel like I was the only remaining person on the planet who had yet to read this book, but it sounded so similar to other ones I had finished that I was wondering if it was even worth it. Well I'm happy to say that it definitely was! The story is told through the eyes of a young teen age girl, Bee, whose mother, Bernadette, vanishes into thin air. Bee is determined to find out what happened to her mother so she spends hours and hours pouring over old emails and letters, even receipts, to piece together the story. I really enjoyed the structure of the book, reading the letters made the book move very quickly and kept my attention. Usually when reading a narrative I like to be able to identify with at least one of the characters, or at the very least feel empathy toward them, but similarly to Gone Girl, I strongly disliked the "victim" in the story. All the characters have very strong eccentricities that made it very difficult for me to rationalize their actions. But the story was so crazy that you desperate to find out what happened next! It's a short and easy beach read for those few people who have yet to check this one off their list.

Like is aid, I just started Emily Giffin's book and I'm already very into it. I have mixed feelings thus far since I can predict where the plot is going and I'm not sure how I feel about it, but Emily never disappoints so I'm sure, ultimately, I will love it. I was telling my friend Michelle that Emily's book are so difficult because they draw you in so quickly so that you are dying to find out what's going to happen, but since her books only come out every few years, you want to savor it! Gosh, life is so hard!

What have you read recently that you would recommend?

  1. Don't worry, I haven't read Where'd You Go Bernadette? yet! It's in my to-read pile, though! I'm in the middle of The House Girl right now, and I'd recommend it! If you have a NYPL card, you can get it for free on their overdrive app!

  3. I finished The One and Only in two days, because I got so drawn in! It wasn't my favorite of hers, but it was a good story.
